As his one-month residency at Knai Bang Chatt draws to a close, textile designer, filmmaker and Homeless Artists Collective co-founder Shanghai Chang will present the results of his stay at Art for Kep on 18–19 July: sculptural busts in dyed textile, rising from voluminous woven skirts, that carry his recurring questions of identity, hybridity and transformation into three dimensions for the first time.

For nearly six decades, he was the quietest and most powerful name in the Asian art trade. Douglas Latchford — self-taught collector, published scholar, a familiar face in Phnom Penh's diplomatic circles — was, for his Western clients, the ultimate guarantee of legitimacy when it came to acquiring a Khmer sculpture. Prestigious museums, New York auction houses, wealthy private collectors: they all trusted him. They were wrong.

Thirty years in Siem Reap, and it is in Phnom Penh that Artisans Angkor has chosen to reinvent itself. The Artisans Festival, the first of its kind in the capital, was not just another event on the city’s cultural calendar. It was something else—something difficult to categorize.

Born in 1992 in the heart of a Cambodia in reconstruction, Artisans Angkor has established itself as the guardian of traditional Khmer know-how. Under the impetus of Kay Lot and Kean Kim Leang, it is reinventing itself today as a bold creative house, blending ancestral heritage, contemporary design, and immersive experiences at the Living Art Village in Siem Reap.

While the echoes of war still resonate at the Kingdom's borders, the capital becomes the sanctuary of a new kind of resistance. Facing the Botum Vattey pagoda, a monumental fresco 35 meters long and 5 meters high was completed on March 3, uniting 70 Cambodian artists in a peaceful response to Thailand's military aggression.

On the mystical bas-reliefs of Angkor, love becomes eternal sculpture; on today’s TV screens, it morphs into intimate drama, sometimes defiant. In Siem Reap, just steps away from the Old Market and the shimmering reflections of the river, a new spot has caught the eye of art enthusiasts this month: the River Gallery, which over the years has become a key venue in Cambodia’s artistic landscape.

For the past several days, the restaurant Kravanh has been hosting eight paintings by Cambodian artist Nou Sary. Initiated last November, this collaboration between The Gallerist, Kravanh, and the artist seeks to create an authentic fusion of color, form, roots, and flavor.

More than a simple “meet the artist,” the event promises to unfold as a living dialogue between a leading figure of the contemporary art scene and an audience eager to understand how the soul of Cambodia can be expressed through pigments, materials, and unexpected perspectives.

Following the success of the initial exhibitions in Phnom Penh, the wave of solidarity continues. From January 10th to 12th, the prestigious Knaï Bang Chatt / Kep West will host an exceptional charity auction. The goal: to support artist Khun Vannak’s battle against cancer and provide aid to refugees.

Raphaël Seyfried, an Alsatian artist who has lived in Cambodia for a decade, has turned his lifelong passion for drawing into a unique creative journey: the Travel Rolls. Inspired by ancient scrolls, these illustrated rolls vividly capture the spirit of Cambodia, portraying everything from Apsara dancers and Angkor’s temples to the colors and movement of Khmer street food.

Since arriving in Cambodia two years ago, French artist Cécile, also known as Celie’s Blue Garden, has been capturing the energy, culture and spirit of the Kingdom through her vibrant watercolor works. Her art — a blend of traditional watercolor techniques with delicate pointillism in Chinese ink — brings to life the country’s streets, dances and ancient legends with striking emotion and color.

It is a beautiful story unfolding today within the prestigious spaces of Raffles Hotel Le Royal, carried by a unique initiative: inviting the children from the NGO Sunrise Cambodia to express themselves through painting, inspired by the elegance and unique atmosphere of the hotel. Their works will then be exhibited and distributed as postcards, offering great visibility to their creativity and their vision of the world.

Plantation Urban Resort & Spa is currently presenting the White Collection, accompanied by a selection of works by Koem Keo Socheat, a young emerging artist originally from Kampot province.

Khvay Samnang's latest solo exhibition, Forest Myth, on show from 2 October to 5 December 2025 at SNA Arts Management in Phnom Penh, sheds a singular light on Cambodia's contemporary art scene.

Plantation Urban Resort & Spa invites the public to a unique visual experience with Human Canvas: Portraits of Identity, a solo exhibition by documentary and travel photographer Joaquin Barata, from 10 September to 19 October 2025, with an opening night scheduled for 10 September.
