Cambodia - Place, People, Process: Julia Higgs Joins Art for Kep

From 22 August to 22 October 2026, Australian visual artist Julia Higgs will take up residence at Art for Kep, spending two months responding to Kep's rainforest and shoreline through drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance.

Julia Higgs works the way tides do — returning, watching, letting the shape of things reveal itself slowly. Based between Canberra and the coast of New South Wales, she is a sculptor, drawer, and performance artist whose practice rarely begins with a fixed idea of where it will end. “I explore, watch, listen,” she says of her process. “I return to places and observe what changes over time, letting work develop from my experience of being there.”

That approach will guide her two months at Art for Kep. Working across drawing, sculpture, installation, and site-responsive performance, Higgs plans to spend her residency in close dialogue with Kep's natural environment — its forest edges, its shoreline, its light. Rather than arriving with a finished concept to execute, she intends to build the work from direct, repeated encounter with the place itself.
