Makaras and Motodops: Joshua Chiang's 10-Year Journey in Cambodia

Ten years ago, Joshua Chiang cast his unique gaze on Cambodia. Since then, he has never stopped reinventing it. The Plantation Resort, a lush green oasis in the heart of the capital, will host the opening of the landmark exhibition on Sunday, March 29, 2026, starting at 4:00 PM: “Makaras and Motodops – Joshua Chiang’s 10-Year Journey”.

Makaras and Motodops: Joshua Chiang's 10-Year Journey in Cambodia

The Singaporean artist, now an indispensable figure on Phnom Penh's art scene, has developed a unique visual language over the years. His famous “Pile Up” style—a layering technique where patterns, silhouettes, and street scenes intertwine in a joyful explosion—has become an instantly recognizable signature.

Under his brush, the Kingdom of Wonder reveals itself in all its graceful complexity. We encounter makaras (mythical creatures from Khmer architecture) conversing with weary yet dignified motodops, vibrant market stalls, and snapshots of daily life bathed in golden light.

With humor, tenderness, and an apparent lightness that conceals profound technical mastery, Chiang captures the paradoxes of a country in perpetual transformation. His work is never mere illustration; it's a sensitive chronicle, a love letter travel journal laid onto canvas.

For this decade of creation, the retrospective exhibition promises to bring together iconic pieces from his early years to his most recent works, offering a complete panorama of an artist who has continually evolved while staying true to his universe.

An Opening Night with a Festive Vibe

The vernissage, set to be the must-attend event on Phnom Penh's cultural scene, won't be limited to a simple stroll among the artworks. The first 100 visitors will receive a welcome drink. But the surprises don't stop there: Joshua Chiang, also a passionate musician, will perform live on stage with his band, turning the evening into a true celebration blending visual arts and music.

Refreshments will be served throughout the evening, and right after the opening speech, the Plantation Resort will unleash its legendary atmosphere with an extended happy hour, inviting collectors, the curious, and art lovers to keep the conversation going until dusk.

this was such a cool and inspiring story to read, Joshua Chiang’s 10‑year journey in Cambodia really shows how much impact one person can have when they invest time, curiosity, and heart into understanding a place and its people, I loved how the post didn’t just talk about travel but also the connections he’s made, the cultural bridges he’s built, and how projects like Makara and Motodops have helped create opportunities and support for others in practical ways, it feels more meaningful because you can see it’s not just about a business idea but about community, respect, and long‑term commitment, reading through it made me think about how in our own lives whether it’s learning something new or tackling a…
