Her rise from humble beginnings to international fame not only showcases Khmer cuisine but also highlights the potential of Cambodian talent on the world stage.

A journey fraught with obstacles

Growing up in Cambodia, Mariya Un Noun faced the harsh realities that many young women encounter. Her future seemed limited to traditional roles or low-paying jobs. Everything changed when renowned Swiss artist and philanthropist Hannes Schmid, co-founder of the charity Smiling Gecko Cambodia, noticed her innate talent.

Smiling Gecko, an initiative dedicated to eradicating poverty through education and sustainable development, offered Mariya a life-changing opportunity. She began her culinary journey at the Smiling Gecko Farmhouse Resort near Phnom Penh. It was there that Mariya's passion and potential were nurtured, leading her to pursue advanced training in Switzerland, where she worked alongside renowned chefs such as Franck Giovannini and Andreas Caminada.

Her professional adventures then took her to Singapore, Bangkok and beyond, where she continues to promote the rich flavours and unique identity of Khmer cuisine.

Promoting Khmer cuisine on the international stage

Mariya's mission is clear: to ensure that Cambodian flavours get the recognition they deserve around the world. Her artistry has not only delighted guests at Michelin-starred restaurants, but has also attracted the attention of renowned brands such as Mercedes-Benz, V-Zug, Victorinox and Bucherer/Rolex, who have supported her as sponsors.

In Cambodia, Mariya is now both the culinary muse and driving force behind the gourmet restaurant and chef's table at the Smiling Gecko Farmhouse Luxury Resort & Spa.

Her success embodies Smiling Gecko's philosophy: empowering disadvantaged young people with skills for a sustainable future.

Inspiration and impact

For Ngon Sokleap, co-founder of Smiling Gecko, Mariya's achievements confirm the organisation's mission:

"Mariya's success is a testament to what we stand for. Our goal is to help disadvantaged people acquire the skills they need to build a sustainable future. "

Beyond the accolades and international recognition, her story is a source of hope for Cambodian youth and a compelling argument for the appeal of Khmer cuisine beyond the Kingdom's borders. Chef Mariya Un Noun's journey from the Cambodian countryside to Michelin-starred kitchens is not just a personal success story. It marks the dawn of a new era, where Cambodian expertise, flavours and spirit can take their rightful place on the global gastronomic map.
