When silence comes to life: Luna Kol captivates Phnom Penh with Suspended Silence

Deep blues, fiery oranges, luminous whites. Around sixty guests gathered for the opening of Suspended Silence, the fourth collection by artist Luna Kol presented in this space.

A warm atmosphere

From 6:30 PM, the gallery rooms filled with a crowd blending collectors, diplomats, artists, and art lovers from all walks of life. Glasses in hand, visitors wandered among the artworks, paused, contemplated, and conversed in hushed voices—as if the tranquility of the canvases naturally commanded a certain respect for silence.

Yet, the atmosphere was anything but cold: discreet laughter, animated conversations, and knowing glances in front of paintings that left no one indifferent. The gallery was buzzing with excitement that evening. Photographers, notebooks, and raised phones bore witness to the public's enthusiasm. On the white walls, Luna Kol's large abstract canvases seemed to radiate their own light.

A word from Julie Thai, founder of The Gallerist

It was with genuine pleasure that Julie Thai took the floor to welcome the guests. "It is always a great pleasure for The Gallerist to present exhibitions that invite you to experience strong emotional and visual journeys," she stated. She then paid tribute to the artist's work with carefully chosen words:

"Luna Kol's abstract art transforms memories, places, and lived experiences into layers of colors and textures. Her paintings reveal traces of emotion, movement, and moments suspended in time."

Julie Thai also highlighted the very essence of this exhibition: "Suspended Silence was born from what the artist describes as 'slowness as a threshold,' a silent pause where transformation can begin." It is an invitation to slow down and breathe—a particularly welcome message in the frantic pace of contemporary life.

The artworks: between breath and matter

On the picture rails, Luna Kol's paintings assert their presence through the power of their chromatic contrasts. Cobalt and ultramarine blues sit alongside intense oranges, sunny yellows, and deep reds. The pigments—stretched, blended, applied thickly or barely brushed—create textured surfaces where the eye constantly finds new details and depths.

Each canvas seems to suspend a moment: a light on a calm sea, the imprint of a silhouette, the trace of a bygone presence. As Julie Thai said, "A Luna exhibition is always a source of inspiration, a moment to slow down and discover invisible layers beyond the surface."

An unmissable event in the Cambodian art scene

For The Gallerist, this opening confirms once again the space's central role in the cultural life of Phnom Penh. By hosting Luna Kol for a fourth time, the gallery demonstrates its loyalty to a strong and coherent artistic vision—and an attachment to works that, exhibition after exhibition, continue to touch, question, and inspire.

Suspended Silence is on view until the end of the month. It provides a necessary interlude, a contemplative pause in the heart of the city.
