Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra &Exhibition: Pen Robit redefines cambodian art with new series 'Krola'

The Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra and Recreation Cambodia are pleased to announce the opening of the latest art series by renowned Cambodian artist Pen Robit, entitled "Krola."

This new series redefines Cambodian art and will be on display at the hotel until septembre 30. The exhibition, which represents the 27th event hosted by Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, will be accessible to the general public from 5 August onwards.

In "Krola," which signifies the harmonious combination of identical forms, Pen Robit explores themes that reflect the visual motifs of rice fields, fishermen's nets, and the iconic squares of the traditional Cambodian scarf, the Krama. This series represents an exploration of the rich Cambodian heritage, reflecting Robit's profound connection to his cultural roots.

Pen Robit's artistic journey led him to the ancient Angkor Temples, where he engaged in a process of immersion in Khmer design and sculpture, drawing inspiration from the intricate details and profound history. Previously, Robit's works often depicted black and red backgrounds, which reflected the shadows of war and Cambodia's past suffering. In contrast, "Krola" embraces a spectrum of colours, celebrating the beauty of Cambodia's legacy.

In his ongoing exploration and refinement of the dripping technique, Robit creates bold contrasts and vibrant hues, replacing the darkness of the past with the brilliance of Cambodia's cultural heritage. In revisiting traditional Angkorian art, particularly the representations of Phka Chan, Phka Chork, and the leaves (Sanluk Angkor) sculptures on the walls of Angkor Wat, he infuses his creations with a blend of personal representation and Cambodian symbolism. This series serves as a testament to his passion and dedication to his craft.

In his work "Krola," Robit conceives and actualizes novel forms that are inspired by the natural world that surrounds us. These forms are shaped by the gentle curvatures of trees and flowers, as well as the rhythmic movements of wind and waves. It signifies a new phase in his artistic development, synthesising his distinctive style with his cultural heritage and the essence of nature, thereby offering a novel perspective on Cambodia, encompassing both urban landscapes and the tranquil countryside.

In a statement, the General Manager, Charles-Henri Chevet, offered the following observation:

"Our commitment to showcasing local talent extends beyond the support of Cambodian artists. By hosting exhibitions such as "Krola", we are actively contributing to the enhancement of Phnom Penh's reputation as a culturally vibrant destination. Despite the current limited visitor numbers, we are committed to highlighting the city's rich artistic scene, with the intention of making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike.”

The exhibition, entitled "Krola," by Pen Robit will be on display from August 5th to September 30th, 2024 at the Gallery at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra. The gallery is open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, and admission is free.
