SM Art Center: Contemporary Khmer Art Finally Finds a Home in Siem Reap

Since its official inauguration on October 25, 2025, the SM Art Center has established itself as one of the most ambitious cultural spaces ever created in Cambodia. Located in Krosang village, Chreav commune, just outside Siem Reap's tourist core, the center presents itself as Cambodia's first contemporary art center and museum devoted entirely to modern Cambodian creation.

A Project Born from Two Extraordinary Journeys
The project bears the signature of two internationally recognized Cambodian artists: Svay Sareth and Yim Maline. Both lived through difficult periods of the country's recent history, a memory that deeply informs the center's artistic and human vision. Their ambition goes beyond simply exhibiting artworks: they wanted to create a space where Cambodian contemporary artists can express themselves freely, where creativity enters into dialogue with cultural heritage, and where younger generations can find mentorship and strength to keep building bridges between Cambodia and the world.
Three Spaces, One Creative Energy
The SM Art Center operates as a single entity encompassing three distinct yet complementary spaces.
S.M. Contemporary Art
This space is the heart of the center: a gallery and museum presenting both a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The temporary exhibitions space is designed as a platform for experimentation and dialogue, open to emerging and established artists, Cambodian and international alike, working across photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed media.
The SM Showroom
Also known as the SM Design Store, this space highlights traditional Khmer craftsmanship through two collections: a Classic Collection, a faithful reproduction of Khmer artistic heritage, and a Contemporary Collection inspired by Sareth and Maline's metaphorical visual language, reinterpreting Khmer identity through shape, color, and material. The center does more than create: it trains and employs artisans from rural communities around Siem Reap, offering them sustainable employment once their training is complete.
The SM Café
This relaxation space rounds out the experience, extending the contemplative mood of the visit.
An Art School for the Younger Generation
The center also houses a visual art school for children, where painting and drawing are taught through an approach blending creativity, innovation, and the transmission of cultural heritage — a concrete way of carrying out the mentorship mission championed by its founders.
A New Milestone for Siem Reap
At a time when Siem Reap is looking to diversify its cultural offering beyond the temples of Angkor, the SM Art Center offers a different experience: that of a Cambodia looking forward without turning its back on its memory. By bringing together contemporary creation, traditional craftsmanship, and educational transmission under one roof, the center joins a broader movement to promote the Khmer art scene, alongside initiatives such as Cambodian Living Arts.
