Phnom Penh: New art exhibition, TOGETHER by Nou Sary

Raffles Le Royal Hotel and The Gallerist are pleased to continue their one-year collaboration, allowing greater visibility to the artists of the Kingdom as well as easier access to hotel guests to contemporary artworks’ exploration.

Third artist to be exhibited this season is Nou Sary, presenting his latest artworks exhibition. The opening night in presence of the artist will be held on the 6th of January

2025 from 6 pm onwards with the presence of the artist.

Nou Sary - Artist inspiration

For Cambodian people, the rice fields organize their territory, feed the population, and provide work. For the painter, the poet, the traveler, they shape perspectives with the sun and the sky reflected there.

Nou Sary’s paintings are punctuated by labor and tradition, enlivened by a lively palette and dynamic touches taking precedence over detail to suggest the idea of repeated, regular movements: work like a mantra that allows one to achieve serenity and inner peace.

Sary says: “These paintings are showing that we cannot live without Mother Nature. They are meant to create emotions and draw people’s attention to my depictions of workers in the fields.”

Sary uses vibrant green and yellow colors as a reflection of forests, rice fields and plants, deep blue for water and terracotta-brown for the soil. Moreover, Nou Sary’s choice to use a bird’s eye view with a plunging perspective is a deliberate and creative one, offering a unique and dynamic way to represent space.

This perspective not only transforms the spatial relationships within the composition but also enhances the emotional or conceptual impact of the work. By adopting an aerial, steep angle, Nou Sary could be inviting the viewer to see the world from an entirely new vantage point, encouraging a fresh interpretation of familiar objects or scenes.

Artist biography

NOU Sary was born in Kandal province, Cambodia in 1971. He studied at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh from 1994-2000, and then moved to France to continue his studies at l’Ecole des Beaux Arts de Saint-Etienne from 2001-2006 where he earned a Diplôme National supérieur d’Expression Plastique.

He is a multi-disciplinary artist enjoying innovative expression in painting, sculpture, engraving, illustration, photography and the creation of installation pieces. Nou Sary is renowned for his unique approach to visual art, blending traditional Cambodian themes with modern expression.
