Destination & Leisure: Kampot, the charms of the Doung Te River

Although the beaches are less accessible than in Kep or Sihanoukville, Kampot still offers a wide range of entertainment options.

Several water sports and leisure centres, where visitors can also enjoy a bite to eat, welcome large numbers of visitors to this increasingly popular destination.

At the leisure centre on the Doung Te River, pedal boats, kayaks and slides are in constant use at weekends. Many tourists visiting Kep also stop here for lunch to rest after a few hours' drive and let their children play in the river.

The atmosphere is very Cambodian, with lots of music that's a little too loud and kayaks that sometimes bump into each other, but good humour reigns supreme. The place isn't littered with plastic or rubbish, and lifeguards are constantly monitoring the river and its banks. The welcome is very friendly, and the prices are reasonable, so there's no reason not to give it a try.

One of the centre's activity leaders says:

‘This type of leisure activity has grown significantly, allowing us to offer a little more entertainment in this coastal town. We've been full every weekend for several weeks now, and I think it's only going to get better.’

To promote domestic tourism, three communities in Kampot and a local travel agency have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to encourage holidaymakers to discover the attractions of their province with a special package deal.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Om Pharin, president and managing director of Charming Cambodia Travel & Tours, with representatives from La Plantation pepper farm, the Trapaing Sangke tourism community and the Natural Salt Production Association of Kampot Province.

In addition to water sports, Kampot has several tourist destinations that are likely to attract locals.

These include its salt and pepper farms, temples, bird sanctuaries, Kampong Trach cave, Kampot's heritage with its museum, old town, night market and food street, the Prek Toek Chhou River and Bokor National Park.
