Julia Higgs shows her drawings on fabric in Kep and draws live to the sound of singing bowls
Australian artist Julia Higgs presents the works made during her Art for Kep residency on Saturday 17 October at Kep West Wellness Center. The exhibition is called “Earth ផែនដី : Water ទឹក។”. It includes a live drawing performance, with Lana Yang on singing bowls. Entry is free.

Julia Higgs arrived in Kep on 22 August. Since then she has been working in response to the rainforest and the shoreline around her. The results go on show on Saturday 17 October at Kep West Wellness Center, from 4pm to 6pm. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
Drawings on fabric, garments and site-specific pieces
The exhibition brings together drawings on fabric, wearable garments and pieces made for the site. The works were shaped by the place and by the shifts between monsoon rain and hot, dry days. They keep its colours: earthy tones that come from the ground. Julia Higgs works mainly with graphite, water and ink on fabric.
A drawing performance to the sound of singing bowls
Julia Higgs will draw live, in front of the audience. Lana Yang will play singing bowls. The artist draws in response to the sound as it unfolds. She is not after a perfect drawing. She is after marks that carry the feel of the sound, made through improvisation and intuition.
Lana Yang is a sound bath facilitator and the wellness manager of Kep West Wellness Center. She leads yoga, mindful movement and singing bowl sessions there.
Julia Higgs, drawing as gesture
Julia Higgs is an Australian visual artist based between Canberra and the New South Wales coast. She works across drawing, sculpture, installation and performance. Much of her practice centres on performative drawing: marks made through movement, gesture and the body.
She holds a Master of Visual Arts from the Australian National University. She has done residencies in the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom, including Draw to Perform in 2019. Her work has been shown in Australia and Europe, including the solo exhibition About Drawing at Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum in 2023.
Kep is not new to her. Julia Higgs first came here in 2012, while travelling through Cambodia. Her website: artbyjuliahiggs.com
