One of the criticisms often levelled at Kampot as a destination is its lack of beaches, despite its proximity to the sea. However, there are a few that are well worth a visit...

It's true that the province is best known for its small hotels and rustic guesthouses along the Praek Tuek Chhu River, but there are a few nice beaches. In fact, most of them are located on Fish Island or Ko Trey.

Fish Island is located a few minutes from downtown Kampot, but it takes a good half hour to get to the beach. The road that runs alongside salt flats and rice fields is quite picturesque, but as you approach the beach, you have to take a dirt road, which is rather bumpy during the rainy season.

To get to the sandy beach, head to Phnom Doang (Coconut Mountain), turn left after passing between the two mountains, instead of going straight ahead. From there, it's only a few minutes' drive.

During holidays and weekends, it can get a little crowded. Otherwise, the rest of the time, the place is very quiet and perfect for a beautiful walk at sunset.

There is an entrance fee of 10,000 riels for the day, and it is advisable to bring drinks and food if necessary, as well as tents and lighting for those who wish to stay overnight. Finally, the site is fairly clean and well maintained. It is therefore recommended that you clean up your picnic area after your day of swimming.
