The Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has officially submitted the application file for “traditional Khmer marriage, Khmer marriage or kar” to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This nomination, submitted on April 2, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the country's ongoing efforts to have this cherished tradition included on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A heritage rooted in ancient times
Announced by H.E. SUM Map, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry, this initiative underscores Cambodia's commitment to preserving the customs that have shaped the Khmer identity for generations. "The Kingdom of Cambodia's objective in nominating the ‘traditional Khmer marriage, Khmer marriage or Kar’ is to preserve and safeguard the traditional customs of the Khmer people, which date back to ancient times and are still widely and faithfully practiced by the population today.
“This initiative also aims to promote awareness worldwide of Cambodia's rich cultural heritage and ancient civilization, particularly the unique traditions surrounding the Khmer wedding ceremony,” said H.E. SUM Map.
A rigorous path to international recognition
The ministry's technical working group continues to work closely with the ICH Secretariat to fulfill all procedural requirements. The application is currently being reviewed by independent and professional bodies, with the process being conducted in strict accordance with UNESCO guidelines. The spokesperson expressed confidence in the progress of the application, emphasizing that the registration process had so far been conducted in full compliance with international standards.
Community spirit at the heart of the process
The nomination process has been marked by strong cooperation between government agencies, the private sector and, above all, local communities, who are the living guardians of these traditions. The ministry praised the dedication of the holders and practitioners, whose active participation ensured that the file and supporting documents reflect the authenticity and vitality of the Khmer wedding ceremony.
The essence of Khmer marriage
The traditional Khmer wedding ceremony is a mosaic of rituals and art, including:
Elaborate wedding rituals passed down from generation to generation
Traditional music and songs that accompany each stage of the ceremony
Distinctive ceremonial costumes and intricate adornments
Symbolic acts and blessings that unite couples and families
These elements, rich in symbolism and meaning, continue to be preserved and celebrated with love as a cornerstone of Khmer life.
Outlook
With the nomination now in the hands of UNESCO, Cambodia waits with hope and pride. The final decision on the inscription of traditional Khmer marriage is expected by the end of 2026, an important milestone that will not only honor the nation's past but also inspire future generations to cherish and preserve their cultural heritage.
As Cambodia awaits UNESCO's verdict, the world is invited to discover and appreciate the timeless beauty of a tradition that unites hearts and communities, echoing the eternal spirit of the Khmer people.
