Cambodia & Nature :Sapria poilanei, the Ghost Flower of the Cardamoms

Somewhere on the dripping slopes of Mount Samkos, in Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, a flower pushes up through the leaf litter with no stem to announce it. It has no leaves, no visible roots, no chlorophyll. It lives for only a few days, grows nowhere else on Earth, and for more than sixty years the scientific world believed it had vanished. This is the story of Sapria poilanei, one of Cambodia's rarest and least-known plants.

In December 2010, wildlife photographer Jeremy Holden, on assignment for the conservation group Fauna & Flora International (FFI), pushed into the wet forest of Phnom Samkos, the highest peak in southwestern Cambodia. On a climbing vine, he found around twenty fleshy buds, one of them freshly open: a thick, waxy corolla mottled red, white and yellow, with a texture that looks almost animal. It wasn't an orchid, or a fungus. It was Sapria poilanei, a parasitic plant that science had barely seen since the 1930s.

A Flower With No Body

Sapria poilanei belongs to the Rafflesiaceae, the family made famous by Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower on Earth, found in Indonesia. Like its giant cousin, Sapria poilanei is holoparasitic: over the course of its evolution it lost the ability to photosynthesize entirely. No leaf, stem or root betrays its presence between flowerings. The whole plant lives inside the roots and stems of a host vine of the genus Tetrastigma, siphoning off water and nutrients much as a fungus would from a tree.

The only outward sign of its existence is a bud, which takes months to form before opening into a fleshy flower 6 to 12 centimetres across, streaked white on dark red. The bloom lasts only a few days. Once it fades, the plant withdraws back into invisibility, hidden inside its host's tissue until the next cycle.

Sixty Years of Silence

The story of Sapria poilanei is one of rediscovery. First described by French botanist François Gagnepain in the late 1930s, based on specimens collected in the Cardamoms, the species then disappeared from scientific records for decades — a casualty of the upheavals Cambodia went through and the remoteness of its last untouched forests. It was not until 2000 that a team relocated it on Phnom Samkos, confirming the plant had not gone extinct, only escaped observation.

FFI's 2010 survey allowed the plant to be documented and photographed in detail in the field for the first time, as part of a wider inventory of Cardamom biodiversity that also turned up green-blooded frogs, populations of Siamese crocodiles once thought extinct in the wild, and several species of carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants.

A Cambodian Exclusive

The genus Sapria has only four known species worldwide, all native to the mountain forests of Southeast Asia: Sapria himalayana, widespread from northeastern India to Vietnam; Sapria ram, found only in Thailand; Sapria myanmarensis, described in Myanmar in 2019; and Sapria poilanei, whose confirmed range is limited to Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains. It remains, to date, the only member of the Rafflesiaceae family recorded in Cambodia.

A Survival Tied to the Forest

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Sapria poilanei as Endangered. Its biology makes it doubly vulnerable: with no leaves or roots of its own, it cannot survive without the Tetrastigma vine that hosts it, which in turn depends on intact primary forest. Any logging or clearing that removes the host condemns the parasitic plant along with it — a plant that is, by nature, invisible except during its brief bloom, and therefore hard to survey, protect, or even anticipate on the ground.

The Cardamoms, where it was found, form one of the last stretches of largely intact tropical forest left in Southeast Asia: more than 4 million hectares straddling Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, nearly half of it now under some form of protection. Sapria poilanei is just one resident among many, but its ghostly, almost unreachable existence sums up what makes this massif so valuable: species that science discovers, loses, and rediscovers, entirely at the mercy of how much intact forest remains to shelter them.
