This day commemorates significant events that gave birth to modern France and continues to be celebrated with fervor not only in France but also in various countries around the world, including Cambodia. Its origins, meaning, and various forms of celebration speak volumes about the enduring legacy of the French Revolution and its universal message of liberty.

Origins of the July 14 celebration

July 14 commemorates two important historical events at the end of the 18th century that shaped the course of French history:

  1. The storming of the Bastille (July 14, 1789): The Bastille was a medieval fortress and state prison in Paris, symbolizing the absolute power and tyranny of the Bourbon monarchy. On July 14, 1789, amid widespread social unrest fueled by famine, economic hardship, and political inequality, an angry mob stormed the Bastille to seize weapons and free the prisoners. This act was not only a revolt, but the awakening of liberty in France, marking the beginning of the French Revolution and the end of absolute monarchy.

  2. The Fête de la Fédération (July 14, 1790): Exactly one year after the storming of the Bastille, the Fête de la Fédération was organized as a grand celebration of national unity and constitutional monarchy under King Louis XVI. It symbolized reconciliation and the collective commitment of the French people to liberty and human rights, embodying the ideals of the Republic.
