Kampong Chhnang declared first “Plastic waste-free” province

The campaigns, entitled ‘Clean Kampong Chhnang, Khmer CanDo’ and ‘National Roads Without Plastic Waste’, were organised in the province's eight districts in May 2024.

Yesterday, Environment Minister H.E. Eang Sophalleth announced that ‘Kampong Chhnang has become the first province to achieve this feat’.

Members of parliament, senior civil servants, provincial authorities, EU delegates and foreign ambassadors, representatives of civil society organisations, development partners and the private sector, as well as teachers and students attended the ceremony organised to announce this good news.

The campaigns were aimed at cleaning 41 roads, with the participation of 399 schools and 219 pagodas, as well as several large factories and private companies. The initiative involved 3,871 teachers, 116,938 pupils, 2,600 monks, local officials and factory workers, who collectively collected 26,349 kilograms of rubbish.

Looking ahead, the Minister stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration with stakeholders, particularly local authorities, to improve waste management, reduce plastic waste and eliminate hazardous waste. These efforts aim to ensure the efficient collection, transport and storage of waste in all communities, schools and urban areas.
