Cambodia & Border Conflict: Two Khmer Soldiers Testify from the Front Line

This document, by Pierre-Yves, Chanda and Jean-Clais, is the result of a personal journey and a collective reflection on the evolution of the Cambodian army from the Apronuc years to the present day. Through first-hand experience in the field, followed by a perspective informed by recent encounters and travels, the authors shed light on the profound transformation of an institution that was long viewed with reserve. Their account, punctuated by first-hand impressions and interviews with soldiers, offers a nuanced and sincere view of an army that is now disciplined, dedicated and focused on protecting the nation.

Two Khmer Soldiers Testify from the Front Line

Testimonial

As a young peacekeeper in Cambodia during the ‘Apronuc’, I discovered, on the ground, the different armed factions that were still fighting each other in a country in search of peace.

Later, when I settled permanently in the Kingdom, I saw the birth of the army resulting from the merger of these different forces and for several years I had a somewhat mixed opinion about it, the behaviour of some people in town and reading the news contributed to this.

In recent years, however, a number of encounters have changed my view. I met young Cambodian officers, some of whom were also peacekeepers abroad, whose kindness, enthusiasm and professionalism made a deep impression on me.

During our recent family trips to the border, I discovered a transformed army: rid of its old dross, disciplined, rustic, and driven by an unwavering devotion to the Nation.

From the general to the private soldier, they all now embody the same image: that of men ready to give their lives to protect those of their compatriots - a truly admirable army!

The following interview with two front-line soldiers sheds a direct and authentic light on this new face of the Cambodian army.
