Angelina Jolie Sets Up Camp in Battambang on Thursday, April 2, 2026. The Oscar-winning actress visited the Prasat Meas Theater and the Battambang Cinema, two architectural gems from the 1960s, remnants of a golden era for Khmer art.

Accompanied by His Excellency Sok Lou, the provincial governor, and officials from the Department of Culture and Fine Arts, she explored these iconic sites during a cultural inspection tour.
The invitation comes from the Phare Ponleu Selpak association, which is seeking her support for an ambitious restoration project to preserve this vibrant heritage.
Legendary Theaters, Beating Hearts of Battambang's Heritage
These iconic venues, born in the 1960s under the post-independence influence of Cambodia, symbolize Battambang's artistic effervescence—nicknamed the "city of arts" for its murals and contemporary circuses.
The Prasat Meas Theater, with its Art Deco lines and openwork balconies, and the Battambang Cinema, a temple of popular Khmer cinema, have withstood the torments of history—wars, Khmer Rouge—to embody a cultural renaissance today. Phare Ponleu Selpak, founded in 1994 to train young talents in circus and arts, carries this call for preservation, aligned with UNESCO initiatives for Cambodia's intangible heritage.

Maddox, the Eternal Link to Cambodia
The day before, Angelina Jolie immersed herself at Samlot Secondary School, observing students' dormitory conditions—an echo of her personal commitment. Adopting Maddox in 2002, she obtained Khmer citizenship in 2005 and founded the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation in 2006 in that same Samlot district.
This initiative, active in environmental conservation, wildlife protection (like elephants at the Elephant Haven sanctuary), public health, and community well-being, has invested millions in schools, farms, and clinics.
From Lara Croft to Humanitarian: A Cambodian Odyssey
It all began in 2000, when Jolie landed in Cambodia for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, filmed at the Angkor temples in Siem Reap. This blockbuster put the country on the world map. Since then, the icon of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Maleficent has woven a red thread with the Kingdom: UNHCR ambassador since 2001, she has advocated for Khmer refugees and funded post-pandemic projects. Today, in Battambang, she reaffirms her love for a Cambodia brimming with artistic effervescence.
