The Ninth Edition of the Angkor Ultra-Trail Illuminates the Ancient Temples of Siem Reap

Organized by Phoenix Voyages in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, the Apsara National Authority, and local authorities, this emblematic event aims to boost tourism by enhancing Angkor’s international aura while supporting humanitarian initiatives.

A Unique Course Through the Ancient Temples

Participants competed across eight race categories — from 100 km (Ultra-Trail d’Angkor) to 8 km (Elephant Trail) — including 64 km (Bayon Trail), 42 km (Angkor Marathon Trail), 32 km (Jungle Trail), and 18 km (three variants such as Temple Run and Nordic Walking). The course led runners through lush jungles, rice fields, authentic villages, and UNESCO World Heritage temples.

The only event authorized to tread upon this Khmer jewel, the UTA offers a rare experience: imagine running at sunrise near Angkor Wat or under the enigmatic faces of Bayon — where athletic effort meets historical wonder. Launched in 2018 by Jean-Claude Le Cornec, the event has grown year after year, rising from 1,200 participants in earlier editions to this record-setting multicultural turnout.

Legendary Performances and an International Podium

In the Angkor Marathon Trail (42 km), French runner Guillaume Rothenflug claimed victory in 3 h 41 min 30 s in the men’s category, ahead of Pierre Frachette and Thibaud Simonnet, while Julie Frachette dominated the women’s race in 3 h 49 min 20 s, closely followed by Marjorie Edme and Renata Wojtkowiak.

For the 64 km Ultra (Bayon Trail), Dutch athlete Martijn van der Wardt triumphed in 5 h 51 min, illustrating the diversity of international talent. The provisional results, published on the official website, highlight a high-level edition with medals for the top five finishers and “Finisher” jerseys for ultra participants, all celebrated in a festive atmosphere near the temples.

The Inspiring Address of the Minister of Tourism

Speaking at the event, H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, praised the race as a vibrant reflection of sporting passion, cultural respect, and values of peace.

“Under the leadership of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister, Cambodia shines through its political stability, safety for tourists and investors, and comprehensive development — making Angkor an irresistible destination,” he emphasized.

A Powerful Driver of Economic and Tourism Growth

The UTA goes beyond sport: it generates significant economic impact in Siem Reap through hotels, dining, and transportation, while promoting sustainable tourism that respects heritage. Supporting three NGOs since its inception, the event blends adventure with solidarity, attracting runners in search of exotic winter experiences and boosting Cambodia’s international visibility.

With its 400 km² of dense vegetation and Khmer temples, Angkor becomes a living backdrop that, without a doubt, inspires participants to return for future editions.
