As part of a decisive initiative to redefine its tourism landscape, Cambodia recently hosted a strategic planning workshop entitled “Mapping Target Markets for Tourism in Cambodia” at the prestigious Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

The workshop served as a platform for dialogue and innovation, focusing on identifying emerging market trends, analyzing changes in visitor behavior, and developing targeted strategies to position Cambodia as a leading global destination.
Emphasis was placed on anticipating changes in travel habits and leveraging the knowledge of incoming agencies and partners to build a resilient, competitive, and forward-looking tourism sector.
Participants highlighted the importance of aligning promotional campaigns with travelers' expectations, showcasing Cambodia's unique cultural heritage, natural beauty, and hospitality.
This strategic initiative is part of Cambodia's broader ambitions outlined at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2025, where the Ministry of Tourism unveiled its plan to attract 7.5 million international visitors by the end of the year, a substantial increase over previous years.
At the heart of this growth strategy is the improvement of direct air links, particularly with key markets such as India and China, through new routes such as IndiGo Airlines' direct flights between Kolkata and Siem Reap and existing links between Phnom Penh and New Delhi operated by Air Cambodia. These developments aim to reduce barriers to travel and enhance Cambodia's accessibility on the international stage.
In addition to expanding its market presence, Cambodia is committed to sustainable tourism development and the empowerment of local communities.
The Ministry actively supports small businesses, including rural homestays and tour operators specializing in nature tours, while promoting national events such as the River Festival and the Sea Festival to diversify the tourism offering throughout the country. Efforts to implement strict tourism standards at the national level and within ASEAN further ensure the quality of services and the safety of visitors.
Looking ahead, Cambodia's “Sacred Tourism 2025-2035” policy illustrates the Kingdom's vision of developing high-end and specialized tourism sectors to attract discerning travelers and investors. This initiative aims to transform certain areas into luxury destinations, thereby strengthening Cambodia's reputation as a world-class tourist hub while promoting economic growth and social development.
Complementing these efforts, the Cambodia Tourism Authority and industry leaders are embracing digital transformation and innovative technologies, such as augmented reality, big data analytics, and smart tourism applications, to enrich the visitor experience and streamline operations. The TourismTech roadmap envisions Cambodia as a regional leader in sustainable and technology-driven tourism by 2030, with a focus on inclusion and environmental management.
The results of the recent workshop will culminate in a comprehensive report to be submitted to the Prime Minister, highlighting the government's commitment to taking swift and concrete action to support Cambodia's tourism momentum.
