From May 21 to August 8, 2025, SNA Arts Management in Phnom Penh hosts Remembering, a poignant exhibition marking the first solo presentation of Cham artist Kaeu Sreypeou. Through a series of 18 acrylic paintings on canvas, the artist offers an intimate immersion into the collective memory and spiritual rituals of the Cham Muslim community in Cambodia.

A Living Pictorial Memory
At the heart of the exhibition are two major traditions: the Mawlid — often called the "Festival of Solidarity Flowers" — and the Tolak bala ceremony, a purification ritual aimed at warding off negative energies. Once widely celebrated, these practices have now nearly disappeared, with the exception of certain Cham Bani communities and Javanese-Malay groups in Kampot province.
Faced with this gradual erasure, Sreypeou acts as a keeper of memory. Her works, nourished by personal recollections, do not simply document these rituals — they reactivate them. Scenes of preparation, precise gestures, symbolic objects, and traditional pastries all become visual fragments of a fragile yet vibrant heritage.
Gesture, Material, Community
Sreypeou's canvases are distinguished by a delicate attention to detail and texture. Decorative patterns, warm colors, and dynamic compositions convey the collective energy of these ceremonies. Far from a fixed nostalgic approach, the artist breathes contemporary vitality into her subjects, revealing the strength of community solidarity and the richness of Cham cultural practices.
Each painting acts as a scene suspended in time — a moment of transmission where artisanal gesture and spiritual ritual meet. Through these images, the viewer is invited to feel, almost physically, the sensory dimension of these celebrations: the colors, textures, and rhythms.
An Emerging Artist, an Assured Voice
Born in 1998 in Kampong Chhnang province, Kaeu Sreypeou belongs to a new generation of Cambodian artists engaged in identity and cultural exploration. Trained at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, she has developed a practice rooted in visual storytelling and social memory.
Her journey reflects both international openness and sustained artistic commitment: workshops with institutions such as the United Nations and Meta House, participation in several group exhibitions, and most recently, an artist residency at United Yoga Asia. Remembering thus stands as a key milestone, affirming a singular and deeply rooted voice.
