In order to ensure the preservation of Khmer identity, Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and other relevant authorities to prepare architectural guidelines for the Angkor Archaeological Park.
The Premier made these remarks on Tuesday during the closing session of the 2024 annual meeting of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction.
In alignment with the requirements of the local population, Samdech Thipadei asserted that the Angkor Archaeological Park should retain its Khmer identity. It is imperative that our construction reflects this. "Should one wish to pursue an alternative approach to construction, this may be undertaken outside the designated heritage zone, which encompasses 400 square kilometres. However, within this zone, it is imperative that the essential character of the area is preserved."
Samdech Thipadei directed the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and the Board of Architects and the Board of Engineers to define the architectural style for villages in the Angkor area for the next 50 years. It is of great importance that the Board of Architects and the Board of Engineers play a pivotal role in the development of architectural design for Angkor, particularly in regard to exterior structures.
Furthermore, the Premier stated that the “area surrounding the Angkor Archaeological Park should maintain a unified architectural style that is consistent with Khmer traditions.”
While modernisation and development are encouraged, the Angkor Archaeological Park site and national heritage areas must be carefully managed to avoid the creation of an urban environment that resembles European cities. Should modernisation occur, it must be in a Khmer style that reflects our values.
It should be noted that Angkor Archaeological Park spans 401 square kilometres and covers 112 geographical locations, including 21 villages, 21 communes, and five districts in Siem Reap province. The population of the area in 1993 was approximately 22,000, and it is expected to increase significantly by 2024.
