Cambodia & Sports: The 10th Angkor Empire Marathon attracts over 4,000 runners

On Sunday, 31 August 2025, the 10th Angkor Empire Marathon was held at the iconic Angkor Archaeological Park, attracting more than 4,200 runners from Cambodia and around the world. This major sporting event, which took place in front of the majestic Angkor Wat temple, offered runners an extraordinary experience, allowing them to discover the remarkable cultural heritage and natural beauty of the surrounding area.

H.E. Thong Khon, President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), emphasised that this competition aimed not only to promote sport but also to attract more tourists during the rainy season, now known as the green season.

‘We had 4,224 runners take part, including 3,462 Cambodians and 762 foreigners from 47 countries and regions,’ he said at the start of the race, adding that most of the international participants came from China, Japan, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Four categories were offered: full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km race and 3 km fun run. Runners were able to follow a unique route winding around Angkor Wat and some 40 ancient temples, in a setting combining impressive Khmer architecture, lush forests, peaceful rice fields and traditional villages. This exceptional route through the heart of the ancient Khmer civilisation is a rare opportunity to combine sporting performance with cultural immersion.

The official results released by the NOCC saw Cambodia's Vann Pheara win the men's full marathon in 2:47:29, while Kan Srey Roth won the women's race in 3:22:09. These performances demonstrate the growing popularity of endurance sports in the country.

Beyond the competition itself, this international event helps to boost Cambodia's visibility as a tourist destination during a traditionally quieter period, attracting a diverse and enthusiastic audience. The executive director of the organising committee, Sem Phalla, is forecasting increased participation for the 2026 edition, with a target of 5,000 to 6,000 runners, thanks in particular to strengthened partnerships with Chinese organisations.

The Angkor Marathon thus illustrates the harmonious alliance between sport, culture and sustainable tourism, in line with Cambodia's strategy to diversify and enrich its tourism offering throughout the year. This major sporting event perfectly illustrates the peace and stability of the country as well as the richness of its heritage, celebrated by runners from all over the world.
