Each year, the month of June returns with its rainbow flags, glitter, and statements of intent. But in Phnom Penh, Pride Month also has its running shoes. The Rainbow Run, organized as part of Pride Fest 2026, brought together runners, walkers, and onlookers this week for a 5 km unlike any other—one where the stopwatch matters less than the color of the smile at the finish line.

Behind the event is a partnership between the Kampucheers, a local running club, and Pride Cambodia (មោទកភាព), the founding organization of LGBTIQ+ celebrations in the kingdom. The concept is as simple as it is effective: a race open to all, without discrimination, filled with clouds of colored powder and driven by a collective energy that is hard to describe for those who have not experienced it. No elite pack, no intimidating race bibs. Just people running, laughing, and existing together, outdoors, in the heart of the city.
That is precisely where the strength of the Rainbow Run lies: it transforms an ordinary sporting activity into an act of visibility. In a country where no law explicitly criminalizes LGBTIQ+ people, but where protections against discrimination remain largely implicit, gathering in public space—in color, in numbers, and in joy—still carries a symbolic weight that other contexts may have forgotten. The race is part of the broader Pride Fest program, whose signature events—Rainbow Run, Pride Remork Race, Pride Walk, Reajiny Pride (the Khmer drag competition), fashion shows, and concerts—function both as festive expressions and strategic visibility tools, designed to reach far beyond the LGBTIQ+ community alone. What began as a project driven tirelessly by its founder, Nack Athens, has grown into a national celebration supported by embassies, private sponsors, and the United Nations. OHCHROHCHR
The 2026 edition of Pride Fest was scheduled for June 20, at the heart of what has become a particularly full June for the community and its allies. The Rainbow Run was one of its opening highlights—and undoubtedly one of the most vivid. Because it is hard to remain indifferent when someone bursts a packet of pink powder over you mid-run, and everyone breaks into laughter. Pride Cambodia
