Cambodia: Over 4,500 runners take part in the 10th edition of the iconic Angkor Empire Marathon

Sportsmanship and cultural heritage will once again bring together runners from all over Cambodia and around the world for the highly anticipated 10th Angkor Empire Marathon, which will take place on 3 August at Angkor Wat temple.

With over 4,500 registered participants, this historic event continues to cement its reputation as one of the highlights of sports tourism in Southeast Asia

The Executive Director of the Cambodia Marathon Committee, Mr Sem Phalla, has confirmed that registration for this historic race is now officially closed. ‘The response has been impressive this year, with the number of registrations steadily increasing to reach 4,500,’ he said. The early closure of registrations was necessary due to the limited number of essential items, such as race bibs and medals, which are complex to import internationally and require significant lead times.

Despite the high demand, Mr Phalla emphasised that around 500 potential runners were unable to register. He stressed the importance of strict adherence to participation protocols, stating that "unregistered runners cannot participate due to crucial safety, security and data management requirements. Our event proudly complies with international standards and all participant data is carefully communicated to the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), ensuring the legitimacy and excellence of the event."

Looking ahead, the Cambodia Marathon Committee envisions a promising future with 5,000 to 6,000 runners expected for the 2026 edition. Plans are underway to expand international participation, including through strengthened partnerships with Chinese organisations, which have shown growing interest in this culturally rich event.

Marathon day promises much more than just a competition: it will also be a lively celebration of Cambodia's rich heritage. The opening ceremony will feature drum performances and participants will be dressed in traditional Khmer costumes, creating a festive atmosphere that pays tribute to the country's deep cultural roots.

In addition to promoting athletic excellence and international camaraderie, the Angkor Empire Marathon is a staunch supporter of charitable initiatives. Proceeds from the event will continue to fund local hospitals and various community organisations, underscoring the marathon's commitment to giving back to the community and improving the lives of its people.

The race categories cater to all fitness levels, including the iconic 42-kilometre full marathon, the challenging 21-kilometre half marathon, a 10-kilometre race for enthusiastic amateurs, and a fun 3-kilometre race designed for families and children.
