Cambodia Bets on India and Australia: AirAsia and the CTB Sign a Strategic Alliance to Revive Tourism

Two signatures were enough to formalize what the sector had been enough or several months: a strategic cooperation agreement between AirAsia Cambodia and the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB). On one side, Nam Vissoth, CEO of AirAsia Cambodia.

On the other, His Excellency Kim Minea, CEO of the CTB — all in the presence of the Minister of Tourism, His Excellency Huot Hak, who presided over the ceremony, marking the government’s direct commitment to this initiative.

The context is significant. Cambodia’s tourism sector generated 3.7 billion dollars in revenue in 2025 — an increase of 3% — but the number of visitors dropped by 16.9% to 5.6 million. A revealing paradox: fewer tourists, but higher average spending per visitor. It is precisely this higher-value traveler profile that Cambodia is now seeking to attract — and this is where New Delhi and Sydney come into play.

100,000 Dollars to Shift Gears

As part of this collaboration, AirAsia and the CTB will jointly invest 100,000 dollars to co-develop and implement a series of marketing and promotional initiatives targeting Indian and Australian travelers. Planned activities include joint digital campaigns, advertising promotions, participation in tourism fairs, as well as familiarization trips for influencers (KOLs) and media representatives from both target markets.

The first joint campaign was launched as early as May 2026. Initial activities focused on digital storytelling, highlighting Cambodia’s cultural identity and the diversity of its travel offerings.

Kuala Lumpur Hub, the Logistical Cornerstone

What distinguishes this partnership from a conventional marketing operation is its grounding in real air traffic flows. Through AirAsia’s Fly-Thru system, travelers can book a single ticket from India or Australia, transit through Kuala Lumpur without customs procedures, and arrive in Cambodia with their luggage checked through to the final destination. This system effectively reduces long-haul travel friction — and therefore barriers to purchase decisions.

The partnership also предусматривает the expansion of routes and flight frequencies, creating opportunities for new tourism products and tailored packages. This enhanced connectivity supports not only leisure tourism, but also business travel and MICE segments (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions).

Why India and Australia?

The selection of these two markets is not accidental. India and Australia represent two of the fastest-growing outbound markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with increasing interest in cultural and heritage tourism. They are also markets that generate longer stays and higher per-visitor spending than the regional average — exactly what Cambodia needs to address its statistical paradox.

If the marketing alliance proves successful in terms of bookings and measurable arrivals, it could support the opening of new frequencies or direct routes linking Cambodia to secondary cities in India and Australia.

A Cambodia Beyond Angkor

Both signatories emphasized one key point: Cambodia is not limited to its temples. Kim Minea stated it clearly: beyond world-renowned heritage sites, the Kingdom offers urban experiences, developing ecotourism, and hospitality that deserves far broader international recognition. Nam Vissoth, for his part, recalled the founding mission of AirAsia Cambodia: to make air travel accessible to all, Cambodians and foreign visitors alike — a promise that aligns directly with the government’s long-term tourism vision.

With this alliance, Cambodia aligns itself with a regional trend: Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have followed similar paths in recent years, multiplying structured partnerships between tourism authorities and airlines to optimize international visibility. Phnom Penh’s stated ambition is clear — to welcome 25 million air passengers by the end of the decade. This partnership with AirAsia is one piece of that puzzle.
