Art for Kep Launches 2026 Cinematic Artist Challenge: Capture Kep in 3 Minutes

The Art for Kep association, active in cultural promotion in Cambodia, is opening applications for the Cinematic Artist Challenge 2026. Under the evocative theme “Kep in 3 Minutes – Our People, Our Culture, Our Ocean,” this call invites local and international creators to produce original works exactly three minutes long.

Filmmakers, videographers, sound artists, composers, musicians, and spoken word performers are invited to explore the essence of Kep, the coastal gem in southern Cambodia, through its inhabitants, intangible heritage, and marine ecosystem.

According to the official Art for Kep website (artforkep.org), this event fits into a dynamic of local and international promotion.

“We are seeking digital and musical pieces that capture the soul of Kep in a short, impactful format,” the association explains in its call.

Submissions, open now, must be submitted via the dedicated platform: https://www.artforkep.org/artist-challenge. The deadline is set for April 25, 2026.

Selected works will be screened at the 2nd edition of the Cambodia International Film Festival (CIFF-360), scheduled from May 1 to 3, 2026, in Kep. This festival, which saw huge success in 2025 with record attendance according to organizers, offers exceptional public visibility to artists. Among the winners, three will share a $500 USD prize each, rewarding creative excellence and narrative impact.

Kep, formerly a French colonial seaside resort known as Kep-sur-Mer, is now reborn as an artistic hub. Bordering the Gulf of Thailand, the town blends preserved beaches, legendary pepper forests, and a fishing community devoted to its Khmer traditions.

The artistic challenge aims to weave a “shared creative narrative,” linking local voices to outside perspectives on these fragile treasures, threatened by climate change and urbanization.

Founded to support Cambodian and international talent, Art for Kep relies on strong partnerships with regional festivals. In 2025, the first edition of the challenge gathered over 50 submissions from 15 countries, according to the website archives. This year, the focus on the ocean – vital to the local economy – resonates with current environmental issues, as highlighted in UN reports on marine biodiversity in Southeast Asia.

For artists, it’s a unique opportunity: not only exposure to an international audience at CIFF-360, but also a lasting contribution to Kep’s cultural history. Selection criteria prioritize originality, thematic coherence, and technical quality, with a jury of film and sound creation experts.

In a context where Cambodia is asserting its place on the global cinema map, this call embodies decentralized creative vitality. Far from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, Kep is emerging as an artistic laboratory, where the ocean inspires and unites.

Art for Kep encourages creators to share the call and apply without delay. “Make your work a source of global inspiration and join Kep’s creative history,” the association urges. To your cameras and mics: the world awaits your 3-minute visions.
