Local tourists and foreign visitors unanimously praised the site's tranquility, cleanliness, and exemplary organization.

A surge in attendance from the very first day

According to data published by the Culture and Tourism Department of the APSARA National Authority, the first day of celebrations, April 14, 2026, recorded 22,671 visitors within Angkor, including 20,580 domestic tourists and 2,091 international visitors.Visitors from various provinces and the capital expressed their pride in exploring this jewel of world heritage during one of the most important festivals on the Cambodian calendar. Many deliberately chose the Siem Reap region for major national celebrations, whether Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben (the festival of the dead), or the universal New Year.

Angkor's serenity, a counterpoint to border tensions

This dynamism occurs in a particularly delicate context. For many months, the Cambodia-Thailand border has been the scene of simmering tension, crystallized notably by the erection of barbed wire and Thai containers near Preah Vihear. The ceasefire of December 27, 2025, did end the armed clashes, but it remains precarious: border posts are still closed, blocking Cambodian workers and commercial exchanges. In this context, visitors interviewed in Siem Reap emphasized that the province remains a safe and serene space. The city of Siem Reap, the Angkor sites, and all tourist areas are operating normally, with tensions confined to the northern border regions of the country, without impact on usual cultural circuits.Tourists also praised the site's greenery, the cleanliness of the paths, and the overall organization of the archaeological park—qualities preserved despite the intense April heat, with temperatures exceeding 35 °C.

Celebrations enriched by a varied cultural program

Beyond Angkor Wat temple, the Siem Reap provincial authorities, in collaboration with the Cambodia National Union of Youth Federations, organized numerous cultural and recreational events in the city. The official 2026 program emphasizes a structured approach, with strong promotion of traditional games, shows, water activities, and religious ceremonies. In Phnom Penh, the capital also staged large-scale festivities around the theme of Nokor Sankranta, combining religious ceremonies and public entertainment over six days, from April 14 to 19, to strengthen Khmer identity among younger generations.

Angkor Wat, symbol of resilience and national identity

In a country still weakened by the aftermath of the border conflict— a 40% drop in rice and livestock exports to Thailand, inflation in border provinces affecting some 200,000 rural residents—the vitality of tourism at Angkor stands as an encouraging signal. The site remains the most powerful symbol of Khmer civilization and an essential vector of national cohesion, attracting millions of visitors each year and making Cambodia one of Southeast Asia's major heritage destinations.
