By forging connections between art, community, and the natural beauty of the Cambodian coastline, "Art for Kep" promises to ignite artistic innovation and place Kep at the heart of Southeast Asia’s contemporary cultural conversation.

Innovative platform

The Art for Kep Artist Residency, backed by Knai Bang Chatt and Kep West and launched with key partners such as Satcha, the Cambodia International Film Festival, Kep Music City, and Marine Conservation Cambodia, is an innovative platform situated in Cambodia’s coastal Kep region. Its mission is to catalyze artistic innovation, cultural exchange, and community engagement by welcoming local and international talent across artistic disciplines.

With immersive studios, tailored accommodation, and deep opportunities for cultural and environmental engagement, the residency is pioneering a new approach centered on sustainability, contemporary practice, and lasting impact.

Art for Kep Ushers in a New Era of Creativity on Cambodia’s Coast

This collaborative platform was born out of a recognition that Cambodia’s contemporary artists often face significant barriers—many receive little or no income and lack institutional support as the country’s cultural development has long focused on traditional values.

The introduction of the Artist Residency program is a transformative opportunity for both participating artists and Kep itself, enhancing visibility, promoting creative freedom, and forging a dynamic hub for cultural excellence and regeneration.

Interview with Jef Moons

Why did Knai Bang Chatt and Kep West launch this residency?

The residency was envisioned as a springboard for Cambodia’s creative transformation, providing space, practical support, and visibility to artists who too often work in isolation.

By fostering artistic excellence and collaboration in Kep, the goal is to nurture a deep-seated respect for cultural diversity, empower local creators, and strengthen Kep’s standing as a beacon for creative innovation in Southeast Asia.

What makes the Art for Kep residency unique?

Each month, up to three artists—local or international, emerging or established—are selected via a transparent application process emphasizing artistic rigor, originality, and societal relevance. The program is deliberately intimate, offering flexible durations (typically one to 3 month) in a supportive cohort setting. Artists benefit from private accommodation, access to facilities, meals, wellness classes, and resources for cultural excursions, as well as the mentorship and collaboration of leading figures in art, design, music, and conservation.

What is the long-term vision for the residency?

At its core, the program is about generating transformational impact. This means nurturing artistic practice that inspires environmental responsibility, amplifying creative voices on global issues, and encouraging a new wave of Cambodian contemporary art.

The long-term vision culminates in the establishment of an ocean gallery—an unprecedented underwater art and conservation landmark that positions Kep and Cambodia at the forefront of creative and marine heritage dialogue.

How does the committee select participants?

Applications are online only (https://www.artforkep.org/artistresidency) and renowed selection committee and by a diverse steering group representing Cambodia’s leading voices in the arts, design, music, cinema, and marine conservation. Selection is based on artistic merit, originality, proven engagement with communities and contemporary practice, and the promise of creating lasting, socially relevant work.

Successful artists are offered not only facilities and support but also avenues to showcase their work, interact meaningfully with Kep’s residents, and participate in community projects and educational outreach.

How does this support local artists and Cambodia’s evolving identity?

For many Cambodian artists, the lack of reliable income and limited support infrastructure means creative careers are difficult to sustain. The Art for Kep residency is an urgent response, offering resources, professional growth, and a collaborative environment that can elevate contemporary voices and diversify the country’s culture. By moving beyond traditional forms, this residency helps chart a course for Cambodia’s cultural renewal where contemporary art gains its rightful place alongside heritage practices.

How does the program engage the wider Kep community?

Artists are encouraged—and in many cases expected—to interact with the community through workshops, exhibitions, and creative projects designed to foster dialogue, curiosity, and inspiration. Every resident’s journey leaves a tangible legacy for Kep, stimulating local creative industries and helping to build a sustainable, inclusive cultural landscape.

What’s next for Kep and the residency program?

The official launch at Raffles on October 30 marks a new era for Kep’s creative development, setting the stage for milestone projects like the ocean gallery, expansion of collaborative networks, and ongoing support for both Cambodian and international talent.

Through partnerships, progressive leadership, and a relentless commitment to innovation, Knai Bang Chatt and Kep West aim to restore Kep’s legendary status as a cultural and social destination for the future.

All artists, gallery owners, and art lovers are warmly invited to join this official launch event at Raffles on October 30 as Kep enters an exciting new creative chapter. In parallel, a separate artist contest is open to all—artists may submit their work before October 26, and winners will be awarded cash prizes at the October 30 launch.
