Stéphane André in Phnom Penh: A New Era for Pain Management and Cambodian Sport

The health and sports landscape in Cambodia is about to experience a major turning point with the exceptional arrival of Stéphane André. A Franco-Canadian expert with over 25 years of international experience, Mr. André is an indispensable reference in the field of rehabilitation, prevention, and treatment of chronic pain and back pain.

His unique career, marked by collaborations with national sports teams, the management of centers for people with disabilities (notably polio survivors), and support for elderly individuals, gives him a rare holistic vision. His visit, scheduled for June, is not limited to a simple series of workshops; it marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration aimed at transforming the approach to pain, for both the general public and the Kingdom's elite athletes.

A Revolutionary Approach to Chronic Pain

The issue of back pain and chronic pain represents a global public health challenge, and Cambodia is no exception. Traditionally, the management of these conditions has often relied on symptomatic treatments or passive approaches. Stéphane André proposes a paradigm shift: moving from a logic of "repair" to one of "autonomy" and "understanding."

During the workshops to be held in Phnom Penh, Mr. André will detail his methodology based on neuroeducation and gentle, gradual remobilization. The goal is not only to relieve pain but to give patients the keys to understanding the mechanisms of their own bodies.

"Pain is not always the sign of a serious tissue injury, but often the result of a hypersensitive alarm system," he often explains.

This new approach invites patients to overcome the fear of movement (kinesiophobia) to gradually regain control of their physical activity.

The sessions will cover concrete functional rehabilitation techniques, the importance of daily ergonomics, and cognitive strategies to modulate pain perception. This holistic vision, integrating the physical and psychological, meets a growing need in an increasingly active population prone to musculoskeletal disorders linked to sedentariness, repetitive physical work, and chronic stress. Mr. André's expertise with diverse audiences, from elite athletes to the elderly, allows him to adapt his advice to each physiological reality.

Elite Sports and Paralympic Movement at the Core of Concerns

Beyond the general public, Stéphane André's visit holds crucial importance for the development of sport in Cambodia. As the official guest of the Paralympic Federation, he will lead workshops dedicated to coaches and athletes. Post-effort and post-competition pain management is a critical issue for the longevity of sports careers, particularly in parasport where biomechanical demands are specific. Drawing on his past experience in centers for people with disabilities, notably with polio sequelae patients, Mr. André has an intimate understanding of the challenges faced by Paralympic athletes.

Mr. André will work with technical teams on active recovery protocols and injury prevention. His intervention aims to professionalize athlete support by providing tools to distinguish "good pain" from effort from that signaling danger. This expertise is crucial as Cambodia seeks to strengthen its presence on the regional and international sports scene, particularly ahead of the upcoming ASEAN Games.

The presence of prominent figures underscores the strategic importance given to this event. His Excellency Yi Veasna, a prominent figure in Cambodian administration involved in social and sports issues, has confirmed his participation in the workshops. His presence highlights the government's commitment to integrating international standards of health and sports performance into public policies.

Likewise, other high-ranking government officials and sports federation leaders will attend these workshops. Under his leadership, the NOCC (National Olympic Committee of Cambodia) has recently multiplied initiatives to modernize sports training in Cambodia, as evidenced by the expansion of the "Olympic Values" program in border provinces and the recent call for more scientific athlete training. Collaboration with an expert like Stéphane André fits perfectly into this dynamic of modernization and professionalization of Cambodian sport.

Toward the Opening of a Specialized Center in Phnom Penh

The highlight of this visit will be the official announcement of the upcoming opening of Stéphane André's "Back Center" in Phnom Penh. Scheduled for October 2026, this specialized center will open at a symbolic time, just before the 20th Francophonie Summit, which will welcome delegations from around the world to Cambodia in November 2026.

This timing is no coincidence. The opening of this center will position Cambodia, and its capital, as a regional hub for paramedical excellence, education, and well-being. It will offer expatriate residents and the local population access to cutting-edge treatments without leaving the country. The center will provide specialized consultations, customized rehabilitation programs, and dedicated prevention spaces, filling a gap in the Kingdom's specialized care offerings. Thanks to its founder's diverse experience, the center will be equipped to welcome both elite athletes and individuals needing adapted rehabilitation or senior follow-up.

By establishing himself durably in Cambodia, Stéphane André is not just exporting expertise; he is contributing to building a more robust health ecosystem. His arrival, supported by local sports and administrative authorities, heralds a fruitful collaboration between international expertise and Cambodia's development ambitions. As the Kingdom prepares to host the Francophonie, this health and sports initiative sends a strong signal: Cambodia is open to the world and determined to offer the best to its citizens and visitors.
