Economy & Diplomacy: Canada will soon open an embassy in Phnom Penh

Canada will soon open its embassy in Phnom Penh to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

His Excellency Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, made the announcement to Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet during their bilateral meeting in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on October 10, 2024, on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN and related summits

With regard to economic relations, Canada will be sending a trade delegation to Cambodia to meet with the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and other relevant ministries to promote bilateral trade. He also expressed optimism about future relations between Canada and the community of countries when the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement is concluded.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the development of the strong relations between Cambodia and Canada, and thanked his Canadian counterpart for his contribution to the peace process and to Cambodia's development.

The Cambodian Prime Minister added that Canada was Cambodia's seventh-largest trading partner, making a significant contribution to the Kingdom's socio-economic development. He recalled recent advances in cooperation between the two countries, such as the organization of a trade fair in Montreal and the future opening of the Cambodian embassy in Canada.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also recalled that the Royal Government of Cambodia had launched a number of reform programs to meet the needs and demands of the private sector, with a better, more welcoming investment climate and incentives to help the private sector move forward.
