Architecture inspired by the Grandiose Past

The pavilion's architecture is inspired by the majestic ruins of Koh Ker, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its 10th-century temples. This reference illustrates Cambodia's desire to highlight its exceptional cultural heritage. Visitors are transported on a journey that combines historical treasures such as Angkor Wat and the classical apsara dance, with its sparkling costumes and delicate movements, living symbols of Khmer culture.

Reliefs from the Samudra Manthana, the Hindu legend of the ‘Churning of the Ocean’, are also reproduced in the pavilion, reinforcing this dialogue between history and myth. A field of golden rice, symbolising the fertility of the Mekong basin, acts as a link between nature and tradition preserved for over a thousand years, evoking the central theme of the pavilion: safeguarding life through the balance between culture and environment.

Looking to the future and sustainable development

Beyond its ancestral splendour, the pavilion showcases Cambodia's modernity through technological innovations and ambitious urban projects. One of the most remarkable projects is J Tower 3, a 333-metre skyscraper currently under construction in Phnom Penh, symbolising the country's growing economic power and its integration into the Asian regional dynamic. This emblematic property project underlines Cambodia's rapid urban transformation, supported by major infrastructure such as Techo international airport, scheduled to open in July 2025.

The striking contrast between the ancient pyramid of Koh Ker, 36 metres high, and the dizzying height of J Tower 3, embodies the desired balance between respect for heritage and aspirations for the future. With this architectural message, Cambodia is asserting its place as a resilient, innovative nation focused on inclusive sustainable development.

A unique Immersive and Cultural Experience

Visitors are invited to discover this harmonious blend through immersive devices such as virtual reality, dynamic projections and interactive exhibitions that tell the story of Cambodia from yesterday to tomorrow. The warm welcome and cultural pride of the Cambodian representatives enhance the experience, illustrating the human richness behind these material symbols.

The presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Sok Chenda Sophea, at the Expo underlines the diplomatic and economic importance of this participation. This initiative is part of Cambodia's desire to strengthen its ties with Japan and attract more foreign investment to support its growth.

A warm reception and an international impact

With more than a million visitors, the Cambodia pavilion was one of the most visited at the exhibition, defying simplistic preconceptions about a country that is often perceived solely in terms of its ancient temples. This international visibility is helping to reposition Cambodia as an emerging player on the world stage, both guardian of a priceless heritage and driver of modernity in Southeast Asia.

This success is also reflected in the recognition of the International Exhibitions Organisation (BIE), of which Cambodia has been an active member since 1997, having already been rewarded for its past participation in universal exhibitions.

In short, the Cambodia pavilion in Osaka is a veritable showcase that combines culture, history and progress with elegance and depth. It illustrates the dynamic renewal of a country which, while honouring its grandiose past, is ambitiously charting its course towards a sustainable and innovative future. This success at Expo 2025 Osaka marks a major step in raising Cambodia's international profile and opens up new prospects for its cultural and economic relations, particularly with Japan.
