Cambodia & Transport: New Techo international airport to open on September 9, 2025

Cambodia is set to officially open its new Techo International Airport on September 9, 2025, marking a major milestone in the country's aviation development.

The airport, located around 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh , will replace the nearly 70-year-old Phnom Penh International Airport as the capital's main air hub.

The Techo International Airport project, which began construction in 2020, is a $1.5 billion public-private partnership investment, financed 90% by the private sector and 10% by the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCA). Covering an area of 2,600 hectares, it is classified as a level 4F airport - the highest international standard - capable of handling large long-haul aircraft and around 13 million passengers a year in its first phase.

The official inauguration ceremony will take place later, on October 20, 2025, and will be presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, underlining the airport's importance for the country's infrastructure and economic ambitions.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the airport incorporates green initiatives such as extensive use of natural light, vertical gardens, rooftop greenery and an on-site solar farm, and aims to become one of the world's greenest airports. Its modern facilities and improved connectivity are expected to stimulate tourism, trade and investment, positioning Cambodia as a key player in regional aviation and economic growth.

Upon opening, Techo International Airport will become Cambodia's largest aviation hub, with plans to eventually handle up to 50 million passengers a year through progressive expansions.

The new airport is expected to significantly improve Cambodia's global connectivity, boost economic development and create numerous jobs, reinforcing the country's strategic role in the Southeast Asian transport network.
